Buying used 17-inch notebooks – the purchase criteria
- Laptop display : 17-inch notebooks can be purchased with a resolution of 1920x1200, 1680x1050, or 1440x900 pixels. In addition to resolution and size, the question of whether you want a glossy or matte display plays an important role when purchasing a notebook. The reflective notebook display impresses with rich colors and good brightness. The disadvantage of this design, however, is that as soon as light hits the screen, the surface reflects. The images on the notebook are almost impossible to read. With matte displays, the image is not as bright because the special surface coating of the screen ensures diffuse refraction when light hits it. However, reflections on the display are much more pleasant for the human eye with a matte display.
- Laptop processor : Regardless of whether you're buying a 17-inch or 15-inch laptop, the most important purchasing criterion is the processor's performance. This is measured in GHz. The processor's performance data alone isn't a reliable indicator of speed, as the computer's performance is determined by a combination of various components. These include the main memory, the hard drive, the graphics card, and the controller for the output and input functions.
- Notebook graphics card : While the graphics card in a desktop PC can easily be replaced with a more powerful one, this is a different matter with a laptop. While simple graphics cards are perfectly adequate for normal use, such as writing emails, surfing the internet, or word processing, you need a bit more power for modern 3D games. More power comes in the form of a high-end graphics card. These include, for example, the NVIDIA GeForce graphics card or the ATI Mobility Radeon. You should also be aware that the integrated graphics chips in a laptop are not sufficient to play games with high frame rates, detail levels, and resolutions. In this case, a simple graphics card has to share the laptop's main memory. This is significantly slower, which means performance isn't really optimal. For a gaming notebook, the graphics card must have its own memory.
- Laptop hard drive : When purchasing a laptop, regardless of whether it's 17" or smaller, the hard drive naturally plays a crucial role, as it stores everything. Be it videos, images, text documents, or other data. How fast or slow an HDD is depends on various factors. The classic notebook HDD consists of several rotating disks including a moving read/write head. The rotation speed of the individual rotating disks is particularly important.
This is measured in RPM (revolutions per minute) and is typically between 4000 and 5400 RPM. Depending on the model, the rotation speed is sometimes faster. For laptop HDDs, the rule of thumb is that the higher the rotation speed, the better, as data can be read and written faster. This is especially true for contiguous data, as in this case, the HDD's read head doesn't have to constantly reposition itself. Other factors that influence hard drive performance include the transfer technology and the HDD's integrated controller.
SSD or classic hard drive
The SSD functions like a non-volatile memory, like flash memory cards or USB sticks. Compared to traditional hard drives, they have the advantage of generating less heat because their power consumption is lower. As a result, they require less cooling. Initially, SSDs were quite expensive, but are now available at affordable prices. Traditional notebooks and laptops can usually be upgraded with SSDs, as most devices have an additional hard drive bay.
- Notebook battery : Typically, you buy a laptop for mobile work. For this reason, the notebook battery is an extremely important purchasing criterion. The battery is a critical issue, especially when buying a used laptop (17 inches or smaller). Since the device has already been used, the battery is subject to a certain amount of wear and tear, which means its battery life is somewhat shorter than when purchased new. This isn't really a problem, as you can purchase a high-performance battery in our shop for a few euros.
Buy used 17-inch notebooks with accessories – top B-stock quality at a low price
In addition to high-quality brand-name laptops in the 17-inch size, you can also purchase used notebooks of all sizes from us. You can expect a consistent level of quality from every computer we sell, as all devices undergo various functional tests and are thoroughly cleaned. Our quality control is extremely meticulous; after all, you, the customer, are our top priority.
Buying a used notebook with accessories – what should you look out for?
a) The processor is the heart of the notebook. The processor's performance should be selected depending on what you intend to use the device for. While Intel Core or AMD chips are perfectly sufficient for laptops purely for office use, notebooks require more power for graphics work. In this case, an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 would be the minimum requirement.
b) The RAM memory of a notebook for normal use should be between 3 and 4 GB.
c) The laptop's hard drive should have a minimum size of 180 GB. Of course, upgrade options are limited here, too. How about replacing the standard drives with SSDs? The advantage is that SSDs have significantly faster read and write speeds, which not only allows for faster data access, but also makes software applications and programs run much more reliably.
d) The display size of a notebook is a matter of taste. For occasional surfing, online shopping, or checking private messages on Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other sites, 12 inches is sufficient. However, devices of this size are rarely available anymore. 14 inches or 15 inches are actually standard if you want to use a laptop for work or gaming.
e) The battery is a tricky thing to consider when buying a used laptop. After a certain number of charging cycles, a certain amount of wear and tear will become apparent. Battery life will be reduced, which isn't the point. If your device's battery is already showing signs of wear, take a look around our shop. In addition to high-quality brand-name laptops, we also offer suitable replacement batteries at affordable prices.
f) The onboard graphics card is sufficient for basic office work, online shopping, or surfing. For graphics applications, you will need a laptop with an external graphics card. Its memory must be at least 512 MB.
g) The drive is an important purchasing criterion for many. Depending on the manufacturer and model, our devices include either a DVD drive or a DVD burner drive.
h) The card reader is optional, but not a must. Amateur photographers will especially love it, as you only need to insert the camera's SSD card to read the images you've taken.
i) WLAN is mandatory, because ultimately a notebook should guarantee mobility in the house.
j) The operating system is partly a matter of taste. In our shop, you decide whether you want to buy a used notebook with or without an operating system. For security reasons, we use the latest Microsoft operating system, Microsoft 11. Purchasing with an operating system naturally has the advantage that you can start using the laptop immediately after it has been delivered by the parcel service. If you've forgotten your Windows 11 password, no problem, here you'll find a Instructions for Windows 11 password forgotten.
k) Looking for a brand-name notebook? You'll find it here! In our shop, you can buy laptops from renowned manufacturers. From Dell, IBM, and Fujitsu to Apple, you'll find the model that suits you best. It's difficult to say which company produces the better notebooks, as this is essentially a matter of experience and taste.
Although we sell used notebooks, you shouldn't expect any significant cosmetic defects. However, time hasn't passed our test, as some models show slight signs of wear on the keyboard. |

Laptop bargains can keep up technically
Buying a new laptop, unless it's a heavily stripped-down model from a discount store, can sometimes be an expensive proposition. However, it's not necessary. The secondary market for laptops, where you can find a used notebook or even a professionally refurbished secondhand one at a reasonable price, is huge!
This has gone so far that enthusiasts can track down working devices from the 1990s, some of which even attain considerable collector value. Consider the old IBM Thinkpad 701C with its fold-out butterfly keyboard. A device that, despite its truly advanced age of around 25 years, still sells for €300 to €400.
The secondary market for laptops is large. This is driven by two developments. First, larger companies regularly throw their "old" laptops back onto the market when they replace their equipment every few years. However, business laptops are generally quite durable and tend to be much easier to maintain than consumer devices. This is how the Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell Latitudes, and HP ProBooks/EliteBooks of this world are finding a second life as home office and casual internet workhorses.
Another factor that favors the large secondary market: Especially in terms of computing power, not all that much has changed in the last 10 to 12 years. If you compare the technological quantum leap from the early 1990s to the mid-2000s, developments have been much smaller since then. While graphics performance has increased considerably in recent years, this only plays a role in high-end gaming and graphically demanding video editing programs and the like. On the other hand, anyone who needs a laptop primarily for communication, home office, Netflix, and the like will be perfectly fine with a well-maintained 2013 device with four to eight GB of RAM and a current operating system.
Our PC offers come with a guarantee!
The laptop and accessory offerings on the secondary market are extremely attractive to a broad user base because the purchase is technically and functionally sufficient for the majority of users and is considerably more affordable. Accordingly, we have decided to consistently serve this market and offer truly top-notch deals, professionally refurbished and typically with a one-year warranty.
The prices we offer far exceed the value for money of a new purchase! Our top offers and top sellers are often popular all-rounders: They are usually former business laptops, such as the popular Lenovo ThinkPads from the popular T series or HP Elitebooks. Devices that often cost well over €1,000 when new and are often available from us for under €500!
These devices have undergone such comprehensive and meticulous refurbishment that we offer a one-year warranty on our work and the devices themselves. However, since these are often high-performance, robust business devices, even after the warranty period, no repairs are required. Affordable laptops don't necessarily mean cheap quality. Our selection consistently includes established model series from well-known, respected manufacturers.
Better than recycling!
Notebook and PC deals not only save money, but also help the environment. Repair and maintenance are the most effective form of recycling! Unfortunately, electronic waste is and remains a huge problem. While the export of electronic waste for "recycling" abroad is expressly prohibited by the Basel Convention of 1995, given the ever-shortening life cycles of devices, illegal exports, which take place behind the scenes, are regrettably still very common.
Unfortunately, electronic waste is a technically very difficult form of waste to recycle. It contains complex material combinations, which can also contain significant toxic substances and harmful elements such as heavy metals, dioxins, and halogen compounds. Due to the high volume and long waiting times at recycling centers, opportunities repeatedly arise for significant quantities to be illegally diverted and exported abroad. Despite the Basel Convention, several hundred tons of electronic waste leave Germany every year!
Refurbished Laptop Offers - Advantages at a Glance
If you don't require high-end graphics performance, then purchasing a used, refurbished laptop is worthwhile. The advantages are obvious:
- Top price-performance ratio
- Up to 3 years warranty
- High-performance and reliable devices
- Technically more than sufficient for conventional home office and media use
- The best form of recycling - the lifespan of the devices is extended
- A thriving secondary market helps to undermine dubious scrap dealers
If you have any questions about a device that aren't answered in the technical specifications, please don't hesitate to contact us. We'll be happy to provide you with information and advice.

A pleasant side effect is that by purchasing a used notebook, you're also actively contributing to environmental protection. There are no disadvantages to buying used in our shop, as we only sell genuine brand-name products. High-quality laptops from Lenovo , HP , Fujitsu , and Apple , which undergo extensive and professional testing before being resold.
Thanks to our comprehensive hardware testing, we can ensure that all devices are in perfect working order upon sale. Nevertheless, every customer receives a one-year warranty. What should a used laptop offer?
- The processor: For personal browsing or office work, a laptop with an AMD A4 or Intel Core i3 processor is perfectly sufficient. However, AMD Athlon or Intel Core M chips should also be able to meet most requirements in these areas. If you need more performance, the laptop should be equipped with at least an AMD A6 or an Intel Core i5.
- RAM: If the laptop's iRAM is between 3 and 4 GB, it's perfectly sufficient for everyday tasks. Of course, you can also purchase laptops with higher RAM at it-versand.com. Upgrades are also possible, but this is limited with laptops. If you plan to use the device for gaming, DDR3 memory is essential for smooth game play.
- The hard drive: The hard drive size of a used laptop should be at least 500 GB, as the amount of data stored in personal applications alone is significantly larger today than in the past. Programs and operating systems are also more complex, requiring more storage space. When purchasing a used laptop, you decide whether you want to keep the brand-name hard drive or replace it with an SSD. SSDs are significantly more stable and have significantly faster read and write speeds. These are advantages that are clearly noticeable when gaming or editing graphics.
- The screen size: When buying a used laptop, it's important to choose the right display size. If the device is just intended for casual browsing on the couch or checking news on various social media channels, 12 inches is sufficient. However, if you want to use the notebook for work, such as writing emails, it's advisable that the screen measures at least 15.4 inches. Of course, the resolution also plays an important role to avoid unnecessary eye strain. For this reason, we pay particular attention to the condition of the display before selling our used laptops. You will rarely, if ever, find dead pixels on the notebook screen. Likewise, worn and/or stiff hinges are rare.
- The battery: Laptop batteries are subject to a certain amount of wear and tear, as their number of charge cycles is limited. As soon as these cycles are exceeded, the battery life is significantly reduced. If this is the case with your device, you can find suitable replacement batteries in our shop at reasonable prices.
- The graphics card: If you want to play games on your new, used laptop, an onboard graphics card is usually not enough. The device should have an external graphics card with at least 512 MB of memory.
- The drive: When buying a used notebook, make sure it has a Blu-ray or DVD drive.
- The card reader: If you're someone who takes a lot of photos, it's advisable to choose a used laptop with a card reader. This allows you to easily read the camera's SSD cards without the hassle of connecting the device to the computer.
- WLAN: At it-versand.com we only sell WLAN-enabled notebooks
- The operating system: In our shop, you decide which operating system you want installed on your used laptop. However, we primarily sell devices without an operating system or with the most modern operating system Microsoft has to offer, Windows 10. The exception to this are our Apple computers, which come with their own Unix-based operating system. Either way, if you decide to purchase a used notebook with an operating system, you can use the device immediately upon delivery.
- The brand: From IBM, Dell, Acer, Apple, and Fujitsu, the selection of used laptops in our shop is extensive. Ultimately, it's up to your preferences and experience to decide which brand you prefer.
- Visual defects: You won't find any significant visual defects, such as scratches or dents, on our used laptops. However, you can tell that our devices are no longer new by looking at the keyboard. Some of the letters are slightly worn.

Another advantage is that by purchasing a used computer, you're actively contributing to environmental protection. Components in a desktop or notebook are made from various raw materials that would first have to be dismantled if you were to decide to buy a new one. Don't waste potential and be aware of your environmental responsibility. Furthermore, buying a used laptop is significantly easier on your wallet, as, as already mentioned, it's significantly cheaper.

Buy a new or used notebook – the same purchase criteria apply
- Regardless of whether you're buying a new or used laptop, the same criteria apply to assessing a computer's performance. These include the processor, RAM, hard drive, size, touchpad, speakers, USB and Firewire ports, Wi-Fi, card reader, and any expansion options. To give you an overview of performance, we've put together a short guide to help you assess a laptop's performance. Before buying a laptop, you should definitely consider what your requirements are. If you only need the laptop for surfing the web or writing, then a mid-range laptop will more than suffice. However, if you want to play games, the laptop needs a bit more under the hood.
- Notebooks come in a variety of sizes. Display sizes range from 12 inches to a maximum of 17.1 inches. The resolution also depends on the type and size of the screen. While 12-inch laptops are typically used for surfing the web or quickly checking Facebook messages, the laptop needs to be significantly larger for office work. For comfortable office work, the laptop's screen should measure at least 15 inches. If the laptop is intended for playing computer games, it's best to choose a device with a 17-inch screen.
- The functions of the touchpad can vary considerably from laptop to laptop. While some devices only offer the same functions as a regular computer mouse, others have additional features integrated, such as a fingerprint reader, etc. If you find the touchpad rather impractical to use, you can of course also connect it via USB or a wireless mouse. For this reason, it's important to have enough interfaces.
- If a laptop is Wi-Fi capable, that's ideal, as you can connect it to your home Wi-Fi immediately after receiving it. If the laptop doesn't have integrated Wi-Fi, however, this isn't an insurmountable problem, as so-called Wi-Fi sticks are now available for a few euros.
- For simple office applications, web browsing, or the occasional online movie, a laptop with an internal graphics and/or sound card is perfectly sufficient. However, if you want to play computer games on your laptop, an external graphics card is much better. A mid-range graphics card is ideal, so that the game runs smoothly and without lag.
- Even though most people work with USB sticks these days, it's still better to buy a laptop with a drive. Even better, one with a DVD burner. A DVD burner can play and burn DVDs and CDs.
- If you're looking to buy a used laptop, you should choose one with a replaceable battery rather than one that's permanently integrated into the device. Even with the best care, notebook batteries lose capacity over time, which isn't really a problem. These days, you can buy laptop batteries on the market, including in our online shop, for a few euros.
- If the new laptop will only be used for office applications or web browsing, an Intel Core i3 processor combined with AMD or Intel Core M chips is perfectly sufficient. A gaming laptop, on the other hand, should have at least an Intel Core i5 or an AMD A6 processor. The more cores the processor has, the better, of course. The same applies to RAM. A typical office PC has between 3 and 4 GB of RAM.
- Depending on the model and manufacturer, our used laptops come with either a traditional hard drive or an SSD. In most notebooks, a traditional hard drive can be replaced with an SSD or a larger HDD.
- The operating system is a different story, as it's a matter of taste. If you still have a license, you can, of course, purchase a laptop from us without an operating system. If not, our shop offers a wide variety of laptops with operating systems. From Windows to Linux, the choice of operating system is entirely up to you.
